A space for cleansing and rebirth...
-
The temazcal represents the earth, the goddess who gives us life and sustains us. When one enters the temazcal, one is entering the womb of Mother Earth, and that is why the temazcal has a dome shape.
-
Outside the temazcal, in some traditions on the eastern side, is located the sacred fire; this represents the sun god, whose fertilizing and creative energy heats the volcanic stones that will then give heat to the temazcal.
-
Often a circle of stones with objects representing the ancestors is also placed to acknowledge the spiritual presence of the grandparents.
-
In the center of the temazcal is a depression where the hot stones are placed; medicinal and aromatic plants are placed on these stones, or an infusion of them is poured over the stones. The plants are also symbolic because of their individual properties.
-
From the moment water or herbal infusion is added to the stones, steam is created and the temazcal already contains all the basic elements of the universe ( earth , fire, air and water).
